Jim
first experienced Co-op Camp Sierra in 1977, and was immediately
hooked. Thereafter he was religious about attending first
week, and he was a long-term member of the camp steering
committee as well as an active booster for many of our
programs. During his first two decades at camp he loved
fishing with his son and friends, or driving up to Mono
Hot Springs near lake Edison. In more recent years he was
often found on the deck of the store playing chess, and
he was quite the competitive player (just ask Scott Cooper).
For nearly 30 years he was an active member of the Toadhouse
Cooperative Cabin situated at the edge of Camp Sierra,
and an organizer for many of its projects.
Although
Jim had a long career in insurance in the Bay Area, what
was more notable was his enthusiastic and unselfish involvement
in numerous civic organizations:
• Bolinas Community Center (treasurer)
• White Caps (board member)
• Rod and Boat Club in Bolinas (member)
• Rotary Club of West Marin (founding member & president elect)
• West Marin Senior Services (volunteer)
• NARFE/National Active and Retired Federal Employees Assn
........ Chapter 400 in Marin County (vice president)
• Marin Shrine Club (past president; and director of the Marin County
........ Shrine Clinic and hospital transport programs.
• US Chess Federation (life member)
• Masonic Organizations (beginning in 1961, an active member and
........ officer in numerous lodges, brotherhoods, and shrines--he
was
........ Past Master of his Blue Lodge)
Jim loved
to cook for people--his pasta al pesto, prime rib, Yorkshire
pudding, and scones were famous in many circles. There
was never an ethical and moral bandwagon he failed to jump
on, nor an opportunity to chat that he missed. Jim’s
big heart, one that could never say “no” to
anyone, failed ... but his contagious enthusiasm and encouragement
live on. |
