Starting from CA-99 South
Headed towards Madera
Distance
from here: 62 miles (approx)
Driving time: 1 hr, 34 min (approx)
•
At the north end of madera, take Millerton Lake-Yosemite (exit
#155) and at top of ramp turn (L) and cross over the freeway.
Go straight through the traffic light and cross the railroad
tracks.
•
Immediately after the tracks, turn (R) onto E Cleveland Ave (which
will immediately curve left, heading you east).
•
In 2 miles the road curves right, becoming Tozar Street and crossing
over a low bridge. Take the first (L) onto Yosemite Avenue (in front
of the 76 station) which puts you on CA-145 East.
•
In about 15.5 miles you'll come to a traffic light at the junction
with CA-41. Go straight through at the light--at this point
CA-145 becomes Road 145.
•
After 3.25 miles, turn (R) onto Road 206.
•
In just over 2 miles the road "T"s into Millerton Road.
Turn (L), then the road curves uphill and to the right in front
of the Friant Dam. Keep to the main road ... don't turn into Millerton
Lake.
•
In 5.7 miles turn (L) onto Auberry Road.
•
After about 10 miles you'll come into Prather with a Kwik-Serve
gas station on the right and a Fosters Freeze and a small mall on
your right. The road curves a bit to the right and 'T's into CA-168
(Lodge Road). Turn (L) at the stop sign.
•
In about a mile, be sure to bear right--Lodge Road makes a major
left to Auberry at this point.
•
After another 1.5 miles, CA-168 turns (L) and becomes 4-lanes. There's
a Park & Drive on the right side of this intersection. The
road gains 3000 ft. in the next 9 miles; it's well graded, but
still steep.
•
After 9 miles you'll be back in some trees and there's a small
Pine Ridge store here. Past the store you'll curve up and to
the left, and the road is pretty winding and hilly from here
on out.
•
6 miles farther, the town of Shaver Lake. Note that CA-168 is now
Tollhouse Road.
•
4.5 miles beyond the town is the north end of the lake, with a
marina on your right. At that point CA-168 will curve right
and start uphill again, but you go straight (in effect turning
left) onto Huntington Lake Road, headed for Big Creek. After
a short uphill climb, you'll have about 4 miles of downhill
driving. Be careful to not overheat your brakes.
•
In 4.5 miles you'll start back uphill, and then it's only a few
hundred feet to Camp Sierra Road. Turn left there, and it's less
than a half mile to the flagpole and parking lot. Registration will
be at King Cabin, the first building to the left of the camp store
as you're facing downhill.
